Funeral Costs in Hong Kong: Understanding an All-in-One Quotation

A single total does not explain funeral costs. Separate service coordination, the venue, supplies, rituals, government charges and transport before comparing quotations.

Define the scope before comparing totals

“Complete service” can mean different things depending on the length of the wake, ceremony, funeral location and family decisions. An all-in-one service coordinates arrangements through one team, but the family still needs to distinguish settled choices from outstanding matters. Start with dates, the preferred form of funeral, the main contact and priorities. Identify what needs an answer within 24 hours and what can wait. If someone still needs to be consulted, put the item in the pending column with a follow-up date; a blank is not confirmation that something is included.

Six components of a quotation

These are categories for checking scope, not six fixed prices or a requirement to purchase every item. Tim Fat Funeral quotes according to each case; this article does not publish a price list.

CategoryScope to clarifyDetails to request
Service feesLiaison, coordination, paperwork and support on the day.Service hours, responsibilities and confirmation of changes.
VenueWake, farewell or funeral space and booking.Place, date, time slot and rental arrangements.
CoffinSelected coffin and related supplies.Model, intended use and outstanding selections.
RitualsReligious or family-requested arrangements.Chosen and undecided elements, with the confirming contact.
Government feesOfficial items handled by the relevant department.Item and department, subject to current published charges.
TransportTransfer of remains, supplies or an agreed route.Start and end points, time and handover contacts.

Official amounts should be checked separately against current FEHD information. When one item involves timing, location and family wishes, connect those details rather than checking only its name.

Compare four boundaries even when the service names match

A useful quotation explains dates and time slots, items and their use, ceremony content, and transport and handover. Mark provisional dates separately from confirmed bookings; distinguish selected supplies from undecided options; identify the person who gives final approval. One relative should update this information for everyone involved in decisions. That does not limit family input: it prevents a changed date or instruction from being missed. An acceptable general direction can be recorded while details remain pending.

Putting “One Checklist, One Price” into practice

Tim Fat Funeral's principle is to put confirmed services and arrangements on one understandable checklist and quote for the individual case. It does not require every detail to be decided immediately. Separate selected items, pending decisions and matters requiring official verification.

Checklist fieldPurposeFamily check
Service itemIdentifies each confirmed task.Is it included in this arrangement?
Date or slotConnects venue, ceremony and transfers.Provisional or confirmed?
Main contactReceives updates and confirms decisions.Telephone, WhatsApp and any limits on delegated replies.
Pending matterRecords missing information without assumptions.Who follows up, and when?
Change recordMakes versions comparable.Date, change and confirmation method.

Each line should show what is decided, what is missing and who acts next. If religious plans, the deceased's wishes or attendance change, review the service scope and dates together. Leave uncertainties for confirmation rather than silently filling them in.

A family example: an answer is needed within 24 hours

Mr Lee receives news of a death in the afternoon. Four relatives cannot meet at once. They prefer a simple arrangement but have not settled the venue, rituals or attendance. One relative records the main contact, earliest reply deadline and decisions still requiring discussion. The team can then explain and quote for the case without treating undecided items as included.

Frequently asked questions

Can we ask for one total price?

Yes, as an initial enquiry, but comparison requires the scope, dates and pending matters. Equal totals may cover different arrangements.

Does “one price” mean nothing remains undecided?

No. Confirmed and pending items must be distinguished, with responsibility for checking them.

Can we enquire before choosing a venue?

Yes. Explain possible dates, family needs and unresolved choices so the team can identify the information needed and quote accordingly.

When should we request an updated checklist?

After any change to dates, rituals, items or transfers, particularly when several relatives share decisions.
