A Complete Guide to Hong Kong’s Seven Licensed Funeral Parlours

Hong Kong has seven main funeral parlours. Compare their addresses, facilities and hall charges, and understand the process from the wake to the funeral, in one guide.

How do I choose among Hong Kong’s seven licensed funeral parlours?

According to the FEHD List of Licensed Funeral Parlours, Hong Kong currently has seven licensed funeral parlours. All have halls and mortuaries for keeping and preparing bodies, and also hold undertaker licences. Three are operated by a non-profit organisation: International, Diamond Hill and Global Funeral Parlours, all run by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

Except for licensed funeral parlours, other undertakers do not have mortuary rooms and auditoriums. They mainly provide services of transporting the body of the deceased, arranging ceremonies and renting funeral parlours. Families can rent the auditorium and mortuary through any licensed undertaker, or inquire directly with the funeral parlour.

Tim Fat Funeral is an FEHD-licensed undertaker at G/F, 26 Baker Street, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Universal, International and Global Funeral Parlours are within walking distance. We can promptly help families view halls, compare available dates and complete the required procedures.

Detailed Information on Each Funeral Parlour

Universal Funeral Parlour

The number of auditoriums in the museum is the largest among the seven buildings, which is suitable for large-scale funerals and families who need to arrange multiple ceremonies at the same time; the entrance hall is suitable for a small number of relatives and friends who want to maintain a solemn and simple arrangement.

It stands in the funeral services district on Cheong Hang Road, Hung Hom, on the same street as International and Global Funeral Parlours and FEHD’s Kowloon Cemeteries and Crematoria Office (Upper Ground Floor, 6 Cheong Hang Road). Documents, hall viewings and availability comparisons can all be handled within walking distance. Tim Fat Funeral’s premises at G/F, 26 Baker Street are also only a few minutes away.

Global Funeral Parlour (Formerly Sai Shing / Eternal Funeral Parlour)

Address: Blocks A and B, 6 Cheong Hang Road, Hung Hom, Kowloon (excluding the government offices and car park in the basement and first floor of Block A), and part of the second floor
Telephone: (852) 3977 6601

Located in Hung Hom, Kowloon, it is one of the main funeral parlours in Hong Kong. It is also the only funeral parlour in Hong Kong that can be operated by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) through tendering (i.e. "Hung Hom Municipal Funeral Parlour"). The current operating rights will start from May 1, 2024 , and the Global Funeral Parlour operated by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals will be put into service.

Basic funeral service charges are capped : The agreement signed between the government and Global Funeral Parlour stipulates that Global Funeral Parlour must provide basic funeral services to the public. The charge for each basic funeral service shall not exceed the burial grant amount issued by the CSSA scheme at the time (the subsidy amount is determined by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) from time to time) Determined and adjusted, will be HK$17,870 in 2026 ). Basic funeral services generally include basic, necessary and complete services for handling the body of the deceased, including but not limited to: transporting the body of the deceased from the hospital or mortuary to a designated funeral parlour, preparing a coffin for the body of the deceased, holding a funeral ceremony in a designated funeral parlour, transporting the body of the deceased from the designated funeral parlour to the final disposal location, and cremating the body of the deceased, etc.

For families on a tight budget, this is the most clear option in Hong Kong with official charging cap . For details of relevant subsidy application, please see Application for CSSA Personnel .

International Funeral Parlour

Address: 8 Cheong Hang Road, Hung Hom, Kowloon
Telephone: (852) 2303 1262

Facilities
Three large halls and 18 mourning rooms, accommodating up to 21 funerals at the same time each day. International and Diamond Hill Funeral Parlours operate a central resource system, sharing six hearses and one eight-passenger vehicle.

International Funeral Parlour is operated by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals . Tung Wah Group of Hospitals has been providing coffin and funeral services since its establishment in 1870. Its funeral parlour also carries on the tradition, so that grassroots citizens will not be unable to handle posthumous arrangements due to financial difficulties. According to FEHD information, International Funeral Parlour, like Kowloon Funeral Parlour and Diamond Hill Funeral Parlour, provides basic funeral service arrangements similar to those of Global Funeral Parlour . For details, please contact the relevant funeral parlour.

With 18 mourning rooms, it has one of the largest selections among the seven parlours. Families seeking a more economical wake therefore have a relatively wide choice of available dates and rooms.

Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Diamond Hill Funeral Parlour

Address: 181 Po Kong Village Road, Diamond Hill, Kowloon (2nd floor, 3rd to 4th floors and rooftop) Tel: 2327-4141

There are three auditoriums and five funeral chambers (based on open use). The entrance hall facilities can hold up to eight funerals at the same time every day . Diamond Hill Funeral Parlour and International Funeral Parlour use the central resource system, sharing six hearses and one eight-passenger bus .

Operated by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals . The biggest advantage of the location is that is in the same district as Diamond Hill Crematorium (No. 199 Po Kong Village Road, Wong Tai Sin). The hearse journey on the day of the funeral procession is very short, and the itinerary is relatively generous, which is especially convenient for elderly relatives and friends. The MTR Diamond Hill Station is accessible and the transportation is convenient.

In the Consumer Council's funeral service package study, Diamond Hill Funeral Parlour's non-religious packages are among the lowest in Hong Kong (based on a hall with a capacity of 30 people, the minimum is about HK$13,520, but hall fees are usually not included).

Kowloon Funeral Parlour

Contact information
Address: No. 1A Maple Street, Kowloon (Tai Kok Tsui)
Tel: 6996 2992

Facilities
Three large halls on the ground floor, eight mourning rooms on the second floor, and five halls on the third floor. The third floor is a dedicated quiet floor suitable for Christian, Catholic and non-religious funerals. The facilities can accommodate up to 16 funerals at the same time each day.

The silent floor on the third floor is the unique selling point of Kowloon Funeral Parlour - traditional funeral parlours often have Taoist funeral rites, Breaking the Hell Gate ritual and other rituals on the same floor, with loud gongs and drums; the silent floor can avoid interference, allowing Christian rest rites, Catholic memorial masses or non-religious farewell ceremonies to be conducted in a quiet environment. According to FEHD, Kowloon Funeral Parlour also provides arrangements similar to basic funeral services.

Po Fook Memorial Hall

Address: 1 Yau On Street, Sha Tin, New Territories (Tai Wai) Tel: 2606 9933

Among the seven licensed funeral parlours in Hong Kong, is the only one located in the New Territories . It is also the only place whose name is called "Memorial Hall" instead of "funeral parlour". The official lot record is Sha Tin City Lot No. 388, Area 18. For family members living in Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Ma On Shan, Fo Tan, Fanling, Sheung Shui and New Territories East, transportation is much more convenient than going to Hung Hom or North Point.

The venue has large halls accommodating more relatives and friends and is close to Fu Shan Crematorium on Lower Shing Mun Road, Tai Wai, Sha Tin, allowing a well-coordinated funeral journey. It suits large families wishing to arrange a substantial farewell ceremony at one venue.

Hong Kong Funeral Home

Address: 679 King's Road, Hong Kong (North Point) Tel: 25615226

Among the seven licensed funeral parlours in Hong Kong is the only one located on Hong Kong Island . It is also one of the oldest and most famous funeral parlours. It is accessible from both Quarry Bay Station and North Point Station of the MTR. For family members living in the East, Central, Western and Southern Districts of Hong Kong Island, it can save time for relatives and friends to cross the sea.

There are multi-story auditoriums and spiritual chambers in the museum, ranging in size from small rooms to large auditoriums. After the funeral procession, I often go to Cape Collinson Crematorium (9 Cape Collinson Road, Chai Wan) , and my trip in the same area is smooth.

Auditorium Rental and Fee Structure

The fee for a funeral parlour is not a single number, but and several layers . Understand the attributes of each layer and collect them first, and get the price first.

The Consumer Council has also studied 48 funeral packages and found that the contents and charges vary: The non-religious package ranges from about HK$13,520 (Diamond Hill Funeral Parlour) to HK$35,800 ; all 48 packages include booking government cremation services for customers, but among them only 41 packages include crematorium service fees (adult $1,220, child $650), and the remaining 7 do not include .

Four questions for price comparison: 1. The quotation Does it include the rental of the auditorium ? 2. How many time slots are there for the first-level auditorium? 3. Tim Fat Funeral provides a truly one-stop funeral service, One list, one clear, one price, full set of services, no miscellaneous fees charged .

Comparing Funeral Parlours, Direct Hospital Funerals, Hospital Farewells and Churches

It doesn't have to be in the funeral parlour setting up the mourning hall. Depending on the number of relatives and friends, the budget and the wishes of the deceased, there are five main methods:

waylocationSuitable for the situationFeatures
funeral parlour the wake and funeral Halls or mourning rooms at the seven licensed funeral parloursThere are many relatives and friends, the vigil is needed, and complete religious rituals are neededCan set up the mourning hall, the vigil, pay homage to the deceased, and arrange large-scale floral tribute stands; the facilities are the most complete and the expenses are the highest
hospital-based funeral (medical hospital-based funeral funeral) Farewell room at the hospital where the person diedThe deceased passed away in this hospital, and his family hopes that it will be simple and solemn. After a simple farewell ceremony, they will be sent directly to the crematorium or cemetery; it is generally only applicable to patients who died in the hospital, and is usually done during office hours.
hospital farewell ceremony Hospital farewell room or facilities next to the mortuaryThe tightest budget and few relatives and friendsThe most streamlined process and the lowest overall expenses
Church/Taoist Hall the parish or church to which the deceased belongsthe deceased is a church member or Taoist discipleArranged by the affiliated organisation, the licensed undertaker will cooperate with the transportation and subsequent cremation of the body of the deceased.
Direct cremation Directly to the crematoriumthe deceased kept his wishes simple during his lifetimeNo setting up the mourning hall, only documents and cremation, the fastest and most simple way

Many hospitals in Hong Kong have farewell rooms, such as the "Farewell Room" of Queen Mary Hospital, the "Wing Ning House" of Pamela Youde Nethersole Hospital in Eastern District, the "Ning Sum House" of Pok Oi Hospital, the "Quiet Hall" of Prince of Wales Hospital, etc. Hospital-based funeral service office hours vary from hospital to hospital, generally from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm. Some hospitals provide services from Monday to Sunday and public holidays. We can contact you and make an appointment on your behalf. For the overall process, please see , complete process of posthumous affairs and service scope .

The Wake, Vigil, Final Encoffining Rites and Funeral: A Timetable

Take the most common " setting up the mourning hall the vigil the night before and the funeral procession the next morning" as an example:

  1. Afternoon of the Wake: Arranging the Mourning Hall

The undertaker sets up the mourning hall with the memorial portrait, elegiac couplets, floral tribute stands and wreaths, offering table and offerings. Paper offerings are arranged according to the rites. The family checks the enlarged portrait and the wording of names and titles.

  2. Early Evening of the Wake: Laying the Deceased in the Coffin

The body of the deceased is moved from the mortuary to the auditorium, where burial clothing and quilts is completed, the body of the deceased is put on makeup and is buried . The family members first pay their respects to the deceased and confirm that they are properly groomed.

  3. Evening of the Wake: Religious Ceremonies

Rites follow the chosen faith: Taoist ritual masters conduct opening-the-way rites, chanting, Breaking the Hell Gate, the journey through the ten halls and the lotus-seat ritual; Buddhist masters chant sutras, lead repentance rites and dedicate merit; Protestant Christian families hold a funeral service; and Catholic families hold vigil prayers. See Taoist and Buddhist services and religious ceremonies.

  4. Evening of the Wake: Mourners Pay Their Respects

Relatives and friends came to the scene one after another to bow or present flowers in tribute, and presented condolence money (white condolence money envelopes, mostly in odd numbers). In return, family members gave funeral return gifts (containing one-dollar coins and candies) and towels . Set up a sacrificial ledger to record the list of names so that you can return gifts in the future.

  5. the vigil

The immediate family members stayed at the funeral hall all night, the vigil, to spend the last night with the deceased. Some families will take turns waiting, and the funeral parlour usually has a seating area.

  6. The Following Morning: Final Encoffining Rites, Sealing the Coffin and Farewell

A grand burial ceremony is carried out, with the family members paying their last respects and then sealing the coffin. Immediately afterward, family members, relatives and friends pay their last respects to the deceased. The time of this step must be strictly controlled because it has to meet the scheduled cremation time.

  7. the funeral procession: a hearse traveling to a crematorium or cemetery

Pallbearers carry the coffin to the hearse, and the family follows by coach to an FEHD crematorium (Cape Collinson, Diamond Hill, Kwai Chung, Fu Shan, Wo Hop Shek or Cheung Chau) or a public cemetery. To watch the coffin entering the cremator by CCTV, tell staff when you arrive so that they can arrange this.

  8. The Post-Funeral Cleansing Meal and Memorial Banquet

After cremation or burial, family members hold a banquet to thank relatives and friends and to ward off bad luck, usually with vegetarian dishes or designated dishes. We can arrange reservations and transportation together.

  9. Day 4 after cremation: Collection of ashes

The applicant or his authorised licensed undertaker can collect ashes at the ashes collection point selected on the application form, and will be issued a " ashes collection licence " ( FEHB 153 ). Arrangements can then be made for columbarium niche, scattering of ashes or burial in the cemetery .

Timing: Work backwards from the allocated cremation session to plan the wake and funeral. FEHD’s performance pledge is to make unallocated sessions available within 15 days from the day after the cremation application is submitted. To change the location, date or time, complete the Application for Cancellation of Cremation Booking (FEHB 264). Fees already paid are non-refundable, and a new application and payment are required. Hall hire and cremation booking must therefore be coordinated; this is a key part of a licensed undertaker’s role.

Eight rules for choosing a funeral parlour

  1. Attendance: how many relatives and friends are expected? A mourning room holds approximately 20–50 people; a large hall may hold 100–300. Too small a room will be crowded; too large a room may feel empty.
  2. Transportation for relatives and friends : Elderly people have many relatives and friends on Hong Kong Island, so it is not easy to choose the New Territories. There is Hong Kong Funeral Home on Hong Kong Island, Po Fook Memorial Hall in the New Territories, and five in Kowloon.
  3. Religious needs: For the Taoist Breaking the Hell Gate ritual, consider the floor and available space. For Christian, Catholic or non-religious farewells, consider the quiet floor on the third floor of Kowloon Funeral Parlour.
  4. Distance from the crematorium : Diamond Hill Funeral Parlour is adjacent to Diamond Hill Crematorium, Po Fook Memorial Hall is adjacent to Fu Shan Crematorium, and Hong Kong Funeral Home. Go to Cape Collinson. The shorter the trip, the easier it is.
  5. Schedule coordination : The auditorium on popular days (weekends and auspicious days) is equally tight as the cremation time slot, so it must be done on both sides.
  6. Budget: the TWGHs funeral parlours (International, Diamond Hill and Global) offer relatively affordable services. Global’s basic funeral service is also subject to an official price ceiling.
  7. Mortuary Capacity : If you need to wait for overseas family members to return to Hong Kong, confirm the number of days the freezer can be stored and the charges.
  8. Parking and pick-up and drop-off arrangements : Arrangements for pick-up and drop-off of tour buses, fancy cars and self-driving relatives and friends. Traffic jams are most likely to occur on the day of the funeral procession, so it is advisable to inquire in advance.

Booking process and required documents

  1. 1. Confirm the burial method and ceremony

Cremation or burial, religious type, expected number of people, budget range. These four items determine the same schedule for the auditorium level.

  2. 2. Complete death registration

Obtain the Medical Certificate of the Cause of Death (Form 18) and Medical Certificate (Cremation) (Form 2), then register the death at the joint office within 24 hours to obtain the Certificate of Registration of Death (Form 12, commonly called the “hang gai zi”). For an unnatural death, the Coroner issues Form 11.

  3. 3. Apply for Cremation Permit

Apply for " Cremation Permit " ( Form 3 ) at the Department of Health Cremation Permit office in the same joint office. Those who already have Form 11 do not need to obtain another form.

  4. 4. Book cremation time slot

The completed "Application for Arrangement of Private Cremation" form ( FEHB 135 ) must be signed and stamped by the licensed undertaker with a seal approved by FEHD, and the originals of Form 12 and Form 3 must be presented.

  5. 5. Confirm the Hall and Mortuary

The licensed undertaker will reserve the auditorium/chamber and mortuary freezer for the corresponding day from the funeral parlour according to the allocated cremation time, and sign a written list.

  6. 6. Confirm Supplies and Staff

Coffins, burial clothing, paper offerings, floral tribute stands, photos, obituaries, emcees, photography, funeral workers, hearses, tour buses, and post-funeral meals are all listed on the same list at once.

Licensing reminder: According to the Undertaker Regulations (Cap. 132CB), undertakings related to the cremation or burial of human bodies of the deceased must hold a valid undertaker licence issued by FEHD; the application form must fill in the information of the licensed undertaker hired, and the undertaker must sign and stamp the seal recognized by FEHD. FEHD also reminds: Do not sign the blank application form . The applicant on the form must be a relative of the deceased, and the contact number, address and email must belong to the applicant himself.
