Choosing a funeral company: licences, quotes and service checks
At a glance
Compare providers through verifiable identity, itemised scope, change terms and named contacts rather than unsubstantiated blacklists.
Identify the contracting party
Record the business name, address, lead contact and payee, and verify applicable licensing through official records. A website or messaging display name may differ from the contracting company; clarify the relationship. A claimed association is not proof of government appointment or a guarantee.
Turn a quote into a comparable scope
Totals are comparable only when the scope matches. Compare coffin specification, venue sessions, transfers, officiants, supplies, official charges and third-party charges. Items described as additional or reimbursable should have a calculation or approval process rather than an ambiguous label.
Agree who can approve changes
Name a principal contact and agree how extras are approved. If relatives order more flowers, vehicles or time, clarify who pays and whether the item is within scope. Record verbal changes in writing or a message so they can be reconciled later.
Cancellation, postponement and venue changes
Ask about deposits, paid amounts, third-party charges and refund terms. “Changes allowed” is insufficient. Establish which arrangements can change and which require a new application if documents, weather, venues or travel plans change. A provider cannot unilaterally guarantee government or third-party appointments.
Handling questions and disputes
Keep quotations, contracts, receipts, messages and version dates. Raise a specific item with the responsible person first. If unresolved, seek the appropriate authority or consumer organisation’s guidance. This guide does not name unverified cases or infer unlawfulness from price alone.

Frequently asked questions
Is the lowest quote best value?
First compare like-for-like scope, then overall cost and arrangements.
Does a licence mean government endorsement?
No. Licensing is different from endorsement or appointment as an agent.
Should payment be made before terms are documented?
Obtain a clear service scope, payee identity and payment terms before paying.
