Choosing an urn: dimensions, placement rules, materials and inscriptions
At a glance
Confirm the final placement and available space before comparing urn dimensions, closure, materials, inscriptions and transport.
Choose for the intended destination
Niches, home storage, temporary storage, scattering and international transport may have different container requirements. Buying an oversized or permanently sealed urn too early can complicate later handling. Obtain the destination’s actual specifications rather than relying on a product name.
Check exterior dimensions and access
Measure height, width and depth including the base and decoration, together with the niche opening, interior and any future placement plans. Capacity and exterior size are different; ask the supplier to confirm suitability. A generous interior does not guarantee passage through a narrower opening or frame.
Materials, weight and handling
Compare weight, fragility, surface care and the intended environment when considering ceramic, stone, metal or other materials. Price alone does not establish durability, and unsupported lifetime appearance guarantees should be questioned. Inspect for cracks, fittings and closure instructions on delivery.
Proofread inscriptions and portraits
A named family member should approve names, aliases, dates, calendar notation, relationships and photographs. Check correction, return and remake terms and whether engraving, portraits and delivery are included. Multilingual names should be checked by someone familiar with their use.
Transport requires a separate check
Airlines, border authorities and destinations may require particular documents or an inspectable container. A sealed urn is not automatically suitable for air travel. Confirm the route and requirements before final sealing and packing. Arrange appropriate assistance for transferring ashes.
